Why filter your shower water?

Chlorine is universally used to control bacteria in water; however, it's surprising for some people to learn that 50% of their daily exposure is in the shower. The other 50% comes from their drinking water. Therefore, filtering shower water is equally as important as filtering drinking water.
How many of us know that chlorine chemically bonds with the proteins in our body causing dry or flaking skin, dry brittle hair, especially colour treated hair, and red irritated eyes.  Not only do we absorb chlorine through our skin but also through our lungs, a much more harmful means of exposure.
In the enclosed shower stall, chlorine vaporizes into chlorine gas (chloroform) that is inhaled and then travels directly into our blood stream.  If there are pre-existing conditions, for example asthma and eczema, these can become exacerbated.
Filtering the shower water reduces these symptoms and ensures you a clean, healthy and refreshing shower.  Just stop and think how much we all spend on expensive skin and hair products, coloured hair treatments to then have a chlorine shower!

How is the chlorine taken out?

In the shower environment, chlorine can either be in liquid or gas state. At higher water temperatures in the enclosed shower stall, free-chlorine moves from the liquid to the gas state, where it vaporizes and subsequently, inhaled.  Thus, the science behind shower filtration must take into account the unique situation in the shower, including temperature, flow rate and volume.
Our shower filters work on a similar principle to a Catalytic Converter in an automobile. In shower filtration free-chlorine is converted into a harmless chloride. The scientific name for this chemical reaction is known as ‘Reduction-Oxidation’, commonly referred to as Redox.
Redox reactions can be chemically complex. Simply stated, during a Redox reaction electrons are transferred between molecules, creating new elements. For instance, when free-chlorine comes in contact with the filtration media, it is changed into a benign, water-soluble chloride. This reaction changes free-chlorine to a larger chloride element that is too large to evaporate or be absorbed by the skin. Instead it is then carried harmlessly through the water supply.

What makes our filters different from others?

Our Shower Filters are the only non-carbon shower filters to remove free chlorine, combined chlorine (sodium hypochlorite), hydrogen sulphide, iron oxide, dirt, sediment and all odours.  We use both Chlorgon and KDF-55 technology.  This combination provides the most complete removal of combined chlorine and free chlorine at the widest range of shower temperatures.
Chlorgon converts free chlorine and some combined chlorines, such as sodium hypochlorite to a harmless chloride and works well in a variety of temperatures from hot to cold.  This is done using a chemical reaction known as ‘Reduction-Oxidation’, often called Redox.
Redox reactions transfer electrons between molecules of the filtration media and molecules found in the water.  A molecule of free chlorine is transformed to a larger chloride, which is water soluble and unable to be absorbed through the skin.
Researched, developed and patented by David Farley, of Sprite Industries.

KDF - Kinetic Degreadation Fluxion is another type of Redox filtration media. Researched, developed and patented by Don Heskett, founder of KDF fluid treatment.  KDF converts free chlorine to a harmless chloride and safely reduces or removes free chlorine, iron oxides and hydrogen sulfide using a high-purity copper-zinc formulation.
